2017 Call for Poets

Note: We are no longer accepting applications for the 2017 festival. We will open applications for 2018 in the spring, and encourage all poets to apply at that time! Questions? Send us an email or ask at us for more information during the Festival in October!

The 2017 call for poets is also available as a PDF.

2017 Application

The Carrboro Poets Council, the all-volunteer planning group for the West End Poetry Festival, seeks applications from poets interested in participating in a session at the festival on the afternoon of Saturday, October 21, 2017, focused on the theme of poetry of resistance. We hope to include a range of poets—of different ages, professions, races and ethnicities, and stages of development.

If you’re a poet interested in being part of a session and can be in Carrboro on Saturday, October 21, 2017, please provide the following information and submit it as a .pdf, .doc, or .docx attachment to westendpoetryfestival@gmail.com by the end of National Poetry Month (Saturday, April 29, 2017).

Please note that we will give preference to poets who have not read at a recent festival. So we suggest that if you read at the West End Poetry Festival in 2015 or 2016 (other than in open mic) you not respond to this call. We thank you for reading in the past and especially encourage you to attend the 2017 festival to support other poets and be part of the greater community of writers.

Unfortunately, we’re not able to provide financial compensation for your participation. But we can offer our heartfelt thanks and publicity via our promotion of the festival.

  1. Name
If you use a pen name, provide both your pen name and your legal name.
  2. Contact information
Provide a phone number, e-mail address, physical mailing address, and Web site address, if you have a personal Web site.
  3. Titles, dates, and publishers of chapbooks and books of poetry or related to poetry, if applicable
If you have published poetry or poetry-related books or chapbooks, list the title, publisher, and publication date for each. Please note that not having a book or chapbook does not mean you won’t be considered seriously—we want the festival to represent a range of poets, including ones at different points in their careers and publication.
  4. A brief bio
Provide a bio of no more than 500 words—and shorter is fine.
  5. Work sample
Please provide two or three poems that you feel speak to the theme of poetry of resistance. If you’re invited to read at the festival, you’ll have the option of reading poems other than those you submit now (as long as they speak in some way to the theme), but we’ll use the poems you submit now to get a sense of your style and approach to poetry.
  6. Brief comment on the theme of poetry of resistance
Write one or two sentences on why you’re interested in participating in a session on the poetry of resistance or on how you feel your poetry speaks to that theme. We’re open to how you respond to the Resistance theme and welcome a wide range of responses to it.
